CoE Police Network Conference

On 19 and 20 March, 2024 the Police Network of the Council of Europe held its third annual Conference titled: “Police data processing: How to harmonize police efficiency with data protection and human rights”.

The Conference was attended by the members of the Police Network (46 countries of the CoE), representatives from International organizations such as INTERPOL, EDPS (European Data Protection Supervisor), European Court of Human Rights, European Commission, academia and other distinguished guests. 

CESP as an observer in this Police Network was represented by Mr. Jesus Lira Calvo, CESP General Secretary.

Main topics of the Conference were: the legislative context of the Council’s Convention 108 and its additional protocol and the respective documents of the Council of Europe on Artificial Intelligence, as well as the EU AI Act of the European Commission.

Participants agreed that the defense of the particular freedoms and individual rights of citizens cannot be called into question and must be fully guaranteed without jeopardizing the security of the citizens while emphasizing the importance of data protection in police processing and the need for mutual international cooperation.
